What to expect

Treatments  Your first visit will include an initial consultation followed by a detailed examination. Both my findings and the treatment plan will be discussed, and there will be ample time for your questions. I allow one and a half hours for the initial visit. Factors that influence the necessary treatment time are type of disharmony (disease, either chronic or acute), the age of the patient and the treatment plan. Follow-up sessions also may vary depending on the treatment plan but should run approximately one hour.

Results  How much relief can you expect? Results vary from person to person. Acupuncture is usually a series of treatments with compound benefits. Typically, the first treatment will bring some relief and possibly complete relief, but one visit may not be enough. The second treatment builds on the first, and each successive treatment should increase results exponentially.

Some conditions respond immediately, as soon as the first treatment is over. Other conditions respond a few hours after treatment, and I have even seen results occur up to two days after a treatment. The type of condition determines when you can expect to see results. Some conditions may respond in one or two treatments; for example, neck issues, knee pain and sciatica. Others may take longer. Your treatment plan will be based on these factors and your individual response to treatment.

Is acupuncture painful? Acupuncture is a personal experience. While everyone is unique, the reaction to acupuncture is rarely painful. The needles used are extremely fine and solid. Needles used for injections are large in diameter, hollow and a solution is forced through them, leading to pressure. Acupuncture needle insertion may lead to a sensation of heaviness or tingling, called "De Qi" or the arrival of Qi. This means that the healing power of the body is being stimulated. Many patients find the process soothing and relaxing, and many fall asleep during treatment. My aim is to make the acupuncture experience a positive one and we can work together to this end.
